Recent Events

“Housing Prices and Housing Affordability in Asia and Around the World” was the theme for the second Tsinghua-USC-NUS tripartite Symposium in Real Estate. The Symposium, hosted by the Institute of Real Estate Studies, Tsinghua University was held in Beijing, China from March 13-14, 2006. The symposium papers focused on housing bubbles, housing affordability, public housing policy and sustainable development. In addition to professors from the three institutions, speakers include senior representatives from the Ministry of Construction, Research Office of the State Council and Construction Bank of China. The next symposium will be hosted by NUS in Singapore.

50 participants attended the Executive Master Class (EMC) on International Real Estate, 4-27 March 2006. The EMC, which encompassed six 3-hour seminar sessions over three weeks, covered hot topics on international real estate including investment opportunities in the Middle East & Eastern/Central Europe, Islamic-compliant real estate vehicles, financing international projects and cash-flow, project and risk management of cross-border investments. The instructors included experts from both the academia and industry such as Dr Ali Parsa (London South Bank University), Dr David Ho (NUS), Mr Lim Swe Guan (EVP, GIC Real Estate Pte Ltd), Mr Tan Teck Long (MD, DBS Bank), and Mr Wen Khai Meng (CEO, CapitaLand Financial Ltd).

The Department conducts customized real estate training sessions for real estate organizations and agencies. It recently concluded an advanced programme attended by 20 executives from Singapore Land Authority in May 2006. In addition to usual seminars covering strategic real estate topics, the 3-full day course requires the participants to carry out a group project involving investment and financial analysis of the proposed integrated resort at Marina South.

Distinguished Visitors

Prof Dwight Jaffee from the Haas Business School, University of California at Berkeley, visited the Department from 2 to 4 May 2006. Professor Jaffee shared his experience in research and course design with faculty members. He also highlighted interesting research issues in agglomeration economics and real estate securitization that may be part of future research efforts.

 

 

 

Prof Chau Kwong Wing visited the Department from 24 – 26 April 2006. Prof Chau is Chair Professor of Real Estate and Construction and former Dean of Faculty of Architecture of The University of Hong Kong. During his visit, Prof Chau presented a seminar paper entitled “The Problem of Revision Transaction Based Real Estate Price Index” .

Visiting PhD student shares insights"

Mr Maarten Jennen, a PhD candidate at the Rotterdam School of Management in the Netherlands, spent a semester at NUS, during which he took three real estate courses offered by the Department. Reflecting on the value of the experience, It is really true when I say that my period in Singapore has been the main reason for this positive change - my horizon grew with the increased knowledge about real estate which put me in a better position.”

Awards

Our congratulations to Dr Joseph Ooi, who received the Red Pen Award from the American Real Estate Society in April 2006 for his contributions to the Journal of Real Estate Practice and Education.

Upcoming Events

MIT Professor to visit NUS: Prof David Geltner, who heads the graduate real estate programme in Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), will be visiting the Department on 17-21 July, 2006. Prof Geltner has published extensively in the area of real estate economics, investment analysis and performance measurement. He is also the co-author of Commercial Real Estate Analysis & Investment, a popular textbook on real estate investment. During his visit, Prof Geltner has been scheduled to give a public talk and present a research paper.
