MRE Alumni

“Building Bonds, Bridging the Future” is the credo of the NUS Office of Alumni Relations. It signifies clearly the importance that the university places on connecting with its alumni. In an interview with The Strait Times (7 July 2004) NUS president Professor Shih Choon Fong acknowledged that some alumni had told him that they do not identify strongly with NUS and felt “neglected by their alma mater.” He responded, “I say to all our alumni: I hear you”. The university is committed to recognizing alumni as key members of the community, he said, and a “warm and supportive” campus environment would be created for them to network.

A great university is measured by the great alumni it produces, of which NUS has countless. Similarly, an excellent real estate programme is measured by the great alumni it produces. Since 1989, more than 330 candidates have graduated with the M.Sc. (Real Estate) degree, or its predecessor degree, the M.Sc. (Property Maintenance & Management). The Department takes pride in what its graduates have achieved and contributed to the real estate industry. It sees the cultivation of a strong bond with its alumni and the industry as a strategic initiative; consistent with its aspirations towards excellent real estate education and research.

To facilitate a strong bonding and to bridge the future, the Department initiated a networking group for its graduate alumni, codenamed MRE Alumni, by hosting a tea session on 26 February 2004 at the Amara Hotel. Through this MRE Alumni network, alumni members can stay connected with the university even after their graduation. In addition, it will provide the members opportunities for continuous personal and professional growth, networking with one another in the same profession and industry, meeting new friends and renewing old ties.

The inaugural executive committee for MRE Alumni, comprising 8 members, was appointed in mid 2004.  Mr Quek Kwang Meng was nominated by the members to chair the ex-co, which will organize events and activities that serve the needs and aspirations of the alumni and at the same time, benefit the university and real estate community. For a start, the MRE Alumni arranged a special tie-up with REDAS to extend a preferential rate to alumni members to attend a lunch talk on REIT in October 2004. The preferential rate will be extended to future lunch talks hosted by REDAS. MRE Alumni members will also get to attend selected master classes, executive programmes and seminars organized by the university at a discounted fee. In addition, a lunch gathering was organized for AMRE members and current and graduating students of M.Sc. (Real Estate) at the Suntec City Convention Hall on 15 December 2004. One immediate task that the ex-co has embarked on is to trace and update the particulars and contact of its alumni members. Members will be posted regularly on activities organized by MRE Alumni as well events and seminars organized by the Department of Real Estate.

An “alumni” is defined as anyone who has registered for the M.Sc. (Real Estate), or one of its predecessor programmes, and studied for at least one semester.  Alumnus of the programme automatically qualifies to be a member of MRE Alumni. No membership fees will be charged and the ex-co hopes that future events will be self-financing. As an NUS alumni, members can register for a lifelong e-mail forwarding address, which carries the suffix,  __@alumni.nus.edu.sg.
